Interviewer: What company did you work with?

Me: I worked with XYZ company. "You must (I think you definitely know about it) know about it".

We say "you must do it", means you have to do it. "Can we also use it to say, I am sure you know it (you must know about it)"? And how to use it in past?

Although "You must know it" is grammatically acceptable, it's not really appropriate for a job interview! It suggests a level of exasperation.

I might say "I worked for [name of company]. You might well have heard of it."

Rephrase your last question. You should know better than to begin '...how to use it...'

I'd have deleted the whole thread if I'd got there first.

I can't believe I missed it.

Sorry guys. I had promised that I would never use "how to" but it happened by mistake. Sorry again.

Let me amend it. Sorry EMSR2D2 in particular because he helps and supports me a lot. Actually I am sure that I had deleted that last line because I didn't want to use "how to" but I don't know how it got posted. I swear to God I had deleted it. I think it happened because of my phone it gets stuck sometimes, it is not working correctly but as you know I am in bed I can't sit and use laptop. So sorry once again but it happened by mistake.

Okay so it can't be used for interviews but in general it can be used. Did I get its meaning right? It has two meanings "1) You must know about it (you should know about it otherwise it will be bad for you). 2) You must know about it (I am sure you know about it)".

Sorry emsr2d2 in particular because he helps and supports me a lot.
Piscean's flippant remarks might have alerted you to the fact that emsr2d2 is female!

In the past:

'I worked at Printers Inc for years. You must have known about it.'

Sorry, I didn't pay attention to that remark. Sorry, again I didn't know that emsr2d2 was a "she" not "he", that's why I was wondering how come this guy is so kind? Now I know because emsr2d2 is a female that's why. I have a question "why did you use flippant here?"

That is an unacceptably stereotypical (verging on sexist) remark, tufguy. Women are no more kind than men. This forum is full of men who kindly give up their time to help learners.

I didn't want to say this. I know that a lot of people help us here and I didn't say ànything meaning that. I am thankful to the people who answer my questions. But you got it wrong. My comment had nothing to do with the gender. I was comparing you with me, if I was in your place, I would have killed tufguy for making so many mistakes, that is what I was trying to say.

I'm closing this thread. It's veered a long way from the original question.
