Cambridge B2 First Speaking Part One on work and studies

Take turns asking each other personal questions about jobs and education from this list:

  • Are you working or are you a student?
  • Are any of your friends planning to change their jobs? (Why?)
  • Are you going to have any particularly challenging work in the near future?
  • Do any of your friends want to work abroad?
  • Do you do anything to improve your career prospects?
  • Do you ever use things that you studied in school in your work?
  • Do you have any favourite time management techniques?
  • Do you like working and/ or studying at home?
  • Do you plan to get any professional qualifications?
  • Do you prefer working and/ or studying in groups or on your own?
  • Do you spend a lot of time in meetings?
  • Do you think you will be promoted in the future?
  • Do you usually work better in the morning or the afternoon?
  • Do you finish your work or studies late every day?
  • Do you share stories of your daily work or studies with your family?
  • Has the world of work changed since you were a child?
  • Have you changed your work or studies recently?
  • How do you prefer to communicate with workmates and/ or classmates?
  • How do you usually plan your daily schedule?
  • How good are you at organising your time?
  • If you could do any job, what would it be?

  • Is there a part of your work or studies that you particularly enjoy?
  • Is there anything about your work or studies that you would like to change?
  • Tell us about the last time you disagreed with a boss or teacher.
  • Tell us about the last job that you applied for.
  • Tell us about your favourite thing about working or studying in teams.
  • What do you like best about your work or studies?
  • What sort of work do you most enjoy?
  • What sort of work do you prefer to get other people to do?
  • What was the last time that you quit a job or course?
  • What’s the most interesting thing about your dream job?
  • When did you last look at some job ads?
  • When you were a child, what jobs did you dream of having when you grew up?
  • Which jobs would you most like to try for a short time?
  • Would you describe yourself as hard working?
  • Would you prefer to work in many companies or in just one?
  • Would you say that you are ambitious?

When your teacher stops you, ask about any questions which you can’t understand, which you are not sure how to answer, etc, answering them together as a class each time.

Change groups. Use the same questions but in the style of Speaking Part One in the B2 First exam, in other words with one examiner and two or three candidates. Mix up asking the next person the same question and ask the next person a different/ new question.
