Classroom requests mimes

Work together to think of at least one suitable mime for each line below, making sure that no two lines have exactly the same mimes.

  • “(Sorry, I didn’t catch that). Can you say that one more time?”
  • “(Sorry, I didn’t hear that.) Can you speak more loudly?”
  • “Can I ask a question?”
  • “Can I borrow your hole punch?”
  • “Can I use your pencil?”
  • “Can we share your textbook? (I forgot to bring mine)”
  • “Can you explain how to use this remote control? (I don’t understand how to use it)”
  • “Can you lend me your scissors?”
  • “Can you pronounce that for me?”
  • “Can you say that again more slowly?”
  • “Can you write that on the board?”
  • “Could I use your hole punch?”
  • “Could I possibly open the window?”
  • “Could you close the door?”
  • “Could you possibly move your bag? (I’d like to sit there)”
  • “Do you have an automatic pencil lead that I can have? (I’ve run out)”
  • “Is it okay to take a photo (on my phone)?”
  • “It’s a little cold. Can you change the air conditioning?”
  • “It’s a little hot. Can I turn on the air conditioning?”
  • “Just a moment. Can I write that down (before you erase it from the board)?”
  • “May I borrow your eraser?”
  • “May I use your dictionary?”
  • “Sorry, I can’t see that. Can you write with bigger letters?”
  • “Sorry, I don’t understand (…) Can you explain…?”

Ask about any which you don’t understand and/ or are not sure of suitable mimes for, working together to think of a suitable mime each time.

Correct these sentences, compare to above, and discuss what is wrong with these:

  • “Lend me your scissors”
  • “Please close the door”

Underline useful language for requests above.

Test each other on the phrases above:

  • Say a phrase and do a mime and see if your partner can repeat both back correctly
  • Do a mime and say a phrase with one word missing for your partner to say the missing word of
  • Do a mime and say a phrase with one word missing for your partner to repeat back with the missing word
  • Do a mime and see if your partner can say a matching phrase
