Good and taboo used to questions

Work in pairs. Each person chooses a different small talk question from below which they think is easy to answer. Together agree on which is better for a normal conversation with someone who you don’t know well, then both answer that question only (not the less suitable one). Then do the same with other pairs of questions from below.

  • Did you use to be a good student?
  • Didn’t this country use to be better when there was less immigration?
  • Did you use to be bullied at school?
  • Did you use to be good looking?
  • What did your favourite subject use to be?
  • What’s that tan line on your finger? Did you use to be married?
  • Did you use to be slimmer?
  • Did you use to collect anything when you were a child?
  • What did you use to do (before your present job or studies)?
  • Did you use to drink when you were underage?
  • Did you use to fight with your brothers and sisters?
  • Have you always had that hairstyle?
  • What kind of mobile phone did you use to have?
  • Didn’t you use to have a different watch/ bag/ coat/…? I preferred the old one.
  • Did you use to have an English teacher from…? (I think I can hear that accent).
  • Did you use to like any sports at school?
  • Did you use to lie to your parents?
  • Did you use to like English at school?
  • Did you use to like hot weather more than you do now?
  • Did you use to like pop music more than you do now?
  • Did you use to like the old (pop/ rock) group…?
  • Did you use to like the old politician/ prime minister/ president/ mayor/ governor…?
  • What TV programmes did you use to like on TV (when you were a child)?
  • Did people in your country use to like the old (soccer/ baseball/…) player…?
  • Did you use to live in…? (I think I can hear that accent).
  • Did they use to show the sitcom/ soap opera/ TV programme/ drama…. in your country/ when you were growing up?
  • Didn’t you usually use to sit next to…? Are you not friends anymore?
  • Did you use to use any old social media?
  • Did you use to use Zoom before coronavirus?
  • What did you use to want to be when you grew up?
  • Did you use to watch… when it was on? (You can see it/ see it again on the streaming service… now).
  • Are there any terrible old fashions that you used to wear?
  • Did you use to wet the bed?

When your teacher stops you, ask about any questions above which you don’t understand, are not sure if they are suitable or not, etc, answering them if they are good questions each time.

Do the same with your own ideas for good “used to” questions.
