Present Simple of be with third person singular and plural drawing game, with students setting challenges for each other.

He She It is They are drawing challenge

Choose one of the categories below that you can draw two examples of and know both English names for, then draw those two things on the board or a big piece of paper. Name each thing when you finish drawing it, in a full sentence starting with “He/ She/ It is…” Then say which category below they both fit in with “They are…” Your partner will then try to draw and name two other things in the same category. You get one point if your partner can’t draw and then name two more things in the same category.  

Your partner will then do the same for their own choice of category. You can change categories or keep to the same category as much as you like, including going back to the same category later, but you can’t draw and name the same examples twice. Take turns doing the same until your teacher stops the game.

Useful language for doing the activity

“He/ She/ It is (a/ an)…”

“They are…”

“I don’t think that is… This picture is…”

  • fruit
  • in the bathroom

  • in the living room
  • in this classroom

  • on the balcony

  • toys
  • ugly animals
  • vegetables
  • workers/ employees/ jobs

When the teacher stops the game, take turns naming and categorising all the things in the picture.

Ask about any categories above you can’t think of at least four examples of, thinking of examples as a class each time.

Switch groups. Do the same, but this time with other categories which are not in the list above.
