IELTS Listening Part One list dictation

Listen to your teacher read out some answers from IELTS Listening Part One gapfill tasks and guess whenever you think you know what all of those words have in common. It could be grammar, meaning, pronunciation, spelling, etc. You can only guess once per hint. If your guess is wrong, you have to wait until someone else has guessed before you guess again. When someone has guessed correctly, listen to the same words again, then do the same with other categories.

Play the same game in groups, with one person looking below and reading one list one item at a time.

When your teacher stops the game, ask about any words which you don’t understand, can’t pronounce, don’t seem to fit into that category, etc.

Test each other on the spelling and pronunciation of the words, with phrases like:

  • “How do you spell…?”/ “Can you spell… for me?”/ “Can I check the spelling of…?”/ “Is… spelt with a… or a…?”
  • “That is spelt… (double…) (with V for violin/ with… for…)”
  • “How do you pronounce this?”/ “Can you say this (for me)?”
  • “It is pronounced… (with v, as in violin/ with…, as in…)”
  • “Sorry, I didn’t quite catch that. Is that… (or…)?”/ “What was that again?”/ “So, that’s…”
