Practising Quantifiers with Ladder Games

Look at the column below that your teacher tells you. It represents a ladder, with the bottom square as the bottom rung. You climb it step by step by guessing something true about your partner with the words above it, such as guessing “You don’t have any famous cousins”, “There are no bowling alleys near your house” or “None of your friends has a desktop computer” if “not any”, “no” or “none” is in the square above.

If your guess with that language is true, you can go up to the next step and do the same again. If your guess is false, you slip back down to “Start” and play passes to the next person. You go back to “Start” every time one of your statements isn’t true, but you can use the same true statements again the next time that it is your turn if you like. All statements must be personal statements about your partner with “you” or “your”.

The winner is the first person to get to the top, or the person who got highest in their final try when the teacher stops the game.

When the teacher stops the game, ask about any language which you couldn’t use, are not sure how to pronounce, etc.

Without looking at the ladder that you used, write as many answers to “How many” and/ or “How much” as you can in the table below. Many other expressions not in the ladders are also possible.

Compare as a class or with the original ladder. Many other expressions are possible and the rankings are sometimes debateable, so please check if you wrote something different.

Extension: Change groups and play the same game again with a more difficult ladder.
