Grammar presentation
Match the future forms above to the functions below. There is more than one of each.
Predictions (= future facts/ my imagination about the real future)
Plans (= things I have decided to do)
Arrangements (= things already fixed with someone else, e.g. by buying a ticket)
Desires (e.g. dreams)
Which of these future phrases are predictions? What function do the others have?
- I’m sorry, I’m not sure. I’ll check with my manager.
- It’s monsoon season, so it’ll probably rain today or tomorrow.
- I won’t have enough money to do that.
- Just a moment. I’ll get it from my bag.
How is that other function of “will” different to plans? Which one is decided before speaking (plans, or this function with “will”)?
Part Two: Plans, predictions and spontaneous decisions
Tell your teacher about a real or imaginary travel plan or arrangement. They will make up a problem that you could have while doing that thing. Quickly decide how you could respond to that problem. Then do the same in groups.
Model dialogue
A: “I’m flying to Beijing tomorrow”
B: “If you go to Beijing now, the pollution will be terrible”
A: “Yes, you are right. In that case, I’ll take a pack of face masks”
