There isn’t a/ There aren’t any dice drawing game
A LESSON PLAN FOR ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEACHERS
Negative sentences with there is and there are game, practising the difficult distinction between "there" with "isn't a" and "aren't any"
Lesson Plan Content:
There isn’t a/ There aren’t any dice drawing game
Take turns rolling a dice to decide what to add or delete from a big picture that you draw together, using the table on the next page.
If you roll 1 or 2, you can make a sentence about one thing that should be in the picture and draw that there, e.g. draw one table. If you roll a 3 or 4, you can do the same with three or four of the same thing, e.g. three chairs.
If you roll a 5, you can erase one thing from the picture (if there is only one of that thing on the board). If you roll a 6, you can delete all of the things of that kind from the picture (if there are examples of more than one of the same kind of thing in the picture). If you roll a 5 or 6 and there is nothing in the picture with that number, you can’t do anything and play passes to the next person.
When your teacher stops you, use similar language to:
- make true sentences about the picture from memory
- describe differences between your picture and another group’s picture
- make negative sentences about things on the board so you can delete them, until they are all gone
Ask about any language below which you don’t understand, are not sure how to use, etc.
Without looking below, put one words into each gap here:
There ____________ a banana.
There ______________ some shoes.
There isn’t _________________ bicycle.
There aren’t __________________ chairs.
Check with the table below or as a class.
Use similar language to find differences between your home and your partner’s home.
