Instructions for teachers

You need two dice per class or one dice per group of three to six students.

Before the activity, write your choice of one of the two versions of things to match each number on the dice from below. It is also very helpful to draw a big circle on the left side of the board (or paper) and a small circle on the right side, with lines joining them to represent perspective. You could also add big and small stick men next to the circles, a big “HERE” and small “there”, etc.

To have a warmer and introduce the dice, you could start with simple questions and answers as students flick the dice to each other across the table, e.g. catching the dice and answering the question “What’s your favourite sport?” from the teacher or their partner. When that has gone on for long enough or they have run out of questions, ask “What’s this?” to get “It’s a dice” or “This is a dice”. Hold or place the dice far away for “What’s that?”, then do the same with two dice for “these” and “those”. Then draw one then two dice in the two circles to elicit the same questions and answers. Then drill the words next to each number below and which place and how many dice each option refers to.

To play the game students take turns choosing one of the cards below, then rolling a dice to decide how many of which thing in each place to draw so their partners can guess. For example, if they pick the “dollar” card and roll a 4, they draw two very small dollar signs in the small circle and ask “What are those?” for their partner to guess and answer “They are/ Those are dollars”. The cards must obviously be kept secret until someone guesses correctly, but rolling the dice can be done either openly or secretly.

Version 1

  1. “this”
  2. “that”
  3. “these”
  4. “those”
  5. “this” or “that”
  6. “these” or “those”

Version 2

  1. “this”
  2. “that”
  3. “these”
  4. “those”
  5. “this” or “these”
  6. “that” or “those”

As an extension and to link to numbers, money and/ or shopping, students can then do the same with “How much is this/ is that/ are these/ are those?”, e.g. drawing two small “$4.99” prices in the small circle for “They/ Those are four dollars ninety nine”.
