Well, it's actually my birthday, so if someone asks me when my birthday is, I say

"The fifth of April ".

You can. However, in letters, I still use 9th.

By the way where do you write the date in letters before or after your address. Is there a special rule for it? Or maybe now you don't write your address on the right hand corner on the top.

.
Before the salutation, and to either the left or right margin. Contemporary practice prefers all text flushed to the left margin.

When it is 4/5 I would read it as the 4th. of May, for I feel that day/month/year makes the most sense.

Obviously, when it it 21/7/ it has to be the 21st. of July.

I just wish that the world, or at least Canada's banking system would make up their minds as to how we are to write it.

Unfortunately, we don't all have the same sensibilities. The only solution is to use an alphabetical abbreviation or complete name for the month.
