| Hello Jaynie66, I then would follow with: "Dear Mr Bloggs," or, if you want to be less formal (for example, if he is a colleague of yours) "Dear Joe," Certainly (if you wanted your letter to be personal) I would not use "Dear Sir". Doris |

| If you know the name of the person you are writing to, you should address that person by name. "Dear sir", "Dear madam" or "Dear sir or madam" should only ever be used if you really do not know the name of the person you are writing to. |
