Q. "I went to the zoo today." What is the tense of this sentence? what is the significance of the word 'today' in this sentence?

(Not a Teacher)

Past tense. "Today" is an adverb of time, telling you when in the past this person went to the zoo.

He went to the zoo earlier that same day.

Welcome to the forums, Dr.Aparajita.

Please note that a better thread title would have been I went to the zoo today.

thanks a lot, hope this helps convince the teacher of my son who is in fifth grade!!

Well, the teacher says it's present tense since the word "today" is there in the sentence!!!!

A teacher who says "went" is present tense has no business being a teacher.

I'm not usually a fan of exclamation marks, but you're right to use so many there. A day has twenty-four hours- time enough for past, present and future. Even now can be used with the past tense. The tense is determined by the form of the verb and not the adverbs.
