Think of it more as something insubstantial, something without any real force. Mush (in the US) is a cereal fed to infants and to the elderly because it is soft, easy to eat and easy to digest. Mush, then can be considered as being something that is soft, without form, and easy to take in - definitions which are about the opposite of a trained mind.
