Hi!
How can you abbreviate the word "for"?
For example, in Portuguese, you can say "Assigned for this task" like this "Destacado para esta tarefa" (where para means for).
In Portuguese you can abbreviate "para" to "p/". So it would be "Destacado p/ esta tarefa". Can you do something like this in english with the word for?

If so, is it polite/correct in the world of formal documents?

I don't think so, as I've never read it but you natives and sage english speakers shall have the final opinion :)

Thanks in advance!

Welcome to UsingEnglish.com, jodp!

'For' contains only three letters, is it necessary to abbreviate it?

I am not a teacher.

The only way I can think of is "4" (which, when read aloud, is pretty similar to "for"), but that is not standard English and should not, therefore, be used in documents.

No, we don't abbreviate "for."

But you may see "w/" used for "with."

In text messages, you will see "I'm here 4 u" for "I'm here for you."

Yes thank you very much. It's not what I wasked for, but it's still something I woudln't recall if I wanted to.

Actually it's possible I can figure out a way of replace the "for" with the "with" and then shorten it to "w/".
Again, thank you!

Why on earth would you want to do that?

Why on earth would you want to do that?

Besides, in all the time invested in sorting this matter out, the OP could have written a whole novel with at least 5,873 "for" in it. :-D
