[Grammar] along/over

Hello,

Can you help me on that one?

"Agricomp plans to spend $54 million over/along the next six years to build laboratories near its headquarters."

According to what is written in the book, the right answer is "over", why can't we choose "along" in this case?

Along- from one end to the other end, referring to physical distance
