Could I use the verb 'to attempt' to mean an attempt on someone's life as in "An assassin attemted a politician's life."?
 
No. Only the noun attempt can be used to mean an attempted murder. The verb requires more qualification.
 
It should be: An assassin made an attempt on a politician's life.
