I agree with you that summer is better than summers there. In fact it is the usual way if putting it. I can't guess why NDTV used the plural.
 
Can I ask why the writer has used the plural "summers" here? Shouldn't it be "the summer"?
I'd use just "summer" with no article.

Ice cream is commonly eaten in summer.
Hot chocolate is regularly drunk in winter.

Winters in Iceland are very cold.

I spent five summers in the heat of Sevilla.

When are you going on holiday?
I haven't booked yet but it'll be in the summer. (Here, "the summer" means "this summer".)

Do you go on holiday every year?
I do. I always go in the summer. (Here, "the summer" is just referring to the season generally. This sentence would also work with no article.)

The original sentence is very strange and you should ignore it. Perhaps this is something that Indian/Pakistani people do, but it isn't natural to native speakers.
