What does the underlined part mean?

It means something like this: because he's an expert (mover) / (player) , (and we all know he is).....

It means a great clay player who wasn't as good as he is would not be so good on grass.... It's a phrase to emphasise his expertise, and to point out that he has wider skills than just one type of game.
