"I'm gonna have to ask you for a small favor" (from 'Ferris Bueller's Day Off')

Is it grammatically right to use the preposition 'for' in this sentence? It's not so easy for me to know when to use 'ask' and when to use 'ask for'. In this case, I wouldn't use the preposition.

The preposition is natural in American English.

Both of the following patterns are commonly used in all major varieties of English.

ask somebody a favor
ask somebody for a favor

(Note, however, that the BrE spelling is 'favour'.)

Does the same happen with "information"?

1 - Can I ask you some information?
2 - Can I ask you for some information?

Not sure whether I should have opened another thread...:-?
