Dear teachers,
Would you tell me your opinion concerning the interpretations of the expressions in bald in the following sentences?
A boy is walking along the street singing at the top of his voice.
Here you are talking at the top of your voice, scandalizing the whole neighborhood… (Th. Dreiser, “The Titan”)
The plane turned on itself in an outward arc, straining with furious defiance against the laws of gravity. Finally, it leveled out again and the audience broke into frantic applause, shouting their approval at the top of their lungs. (M. Dodd, “Sowing the Wind”)
The dog is barking at the top of its voice.
The dog is barking its head off.
at the top of one’s voice = shout lustily
barking at the top of its voice = barking its head off
Thanks for your efforts.
Regards,
V
