Dear teachers,
Would you tell me whether I am right about my interpretation of the expressions in bold in the following sentence?
…I gave up the idea of a circus, and concluded he was from an asylum. But we never came to an asylum – so I was up a stump … (M. Twain, “A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court”)
be up a stump = get confused, get into a tangle, don’t know what to do
