I've searched the forums for this, but there's not much discussion.

Native AmE and BrE speakers, which do you prefer? Let's say you're saying "Aunt Mary gave that to you as a ____________."

Birthday present or birthday gift?

Christmas present or Christmas gift?
 
Present is much more common for both in AmE.
 
... and in all varieties of English, as far as I am aware.

Yes. Moreover, we never say present wrapping, though we will often speak of wrapping a present.
