Hello!

Is the use of "from" correct in this sentence, please?

"That big millionaire bought the patent from an engineer".

Could we use "to" instead without changing the meaning?

No, you can not interchange "from" and "to" without changing meaning. In this case, "to" would not make sense at all.
 
To and from are essentially antonyms.

'...buy from' '...sell to.'
