What does "calling" mean in the following?

Here is a list compiled by the Huffington Post in December 2009 of twelve things that became or are on their way to becoming obsolete in the first ten years of the new millennium.

What does "calling" mean in the following?

I think they probably simply mean "making telephone calls". So many people deal exclusively by text message, email and instant message these days that making a phone call is becoming quite unusual.
 
I see. I thought it could mean "making phone calls," but because many people are still making calls using the mobile phones, I thought it might mean some other thing.

It might mean cold calling by people trying to sell stuff- if they do mean simply making phone calls, then I'd say they're wide of the mark.
