I don't see how the company could decide to close on a holiday and expect you to use a vacation day! That's ridiculous.
The company I'm thinking of closes for two weeks each summer. The employees receive paid vacation for the period, in addition to their individual paid vacation. I don't think this is common in the United States.I wouldn't consider it a benefit if I were forced to take annual leave for that period, nor if I were not paid when the company was shut.

I couldn't agree more! The owner/manager said that he inherited the system from the previous owner but we pointed out that that didn't mean he couldn't change it!
