I don't understand "come out on the other side". It seems to me that it should be "come out from the other side". What does "on" mean here?

It seems to me that it should be "come out from the other side".
No, that would be wrong.

The keyword here is "custody", after which one is supposed to either walk free or face trial in court. That's the other side. The speaker here is saying that black people fear dying (or being killed) in custody. The preposition "on" is commonly used with "side".
