I teach quite a different language. I can speak English a little, and a girl asked me about commas in English, just by the way. So don't be snide quoting inappropriate words, I'm not a native speaker or an English teacher to be perfect:-( I'm here, because I often need your help
There was nothing snide about my post, nor was quoting "learner" inappropriate. You called her "my learner". I was going to change it to "my student" but as your profile does not show that you are a teacher, I did not consider that you might have students.
It would have been clear if you had said something like "I teach Polish/Spanish/Russian/Chinese etc. One of my students, who knows I speak some English, asked me if there is an rule in English about putting a comma after 'but'." You gave us no context and no explanation.
As Rover said, that student can join the forum and ask us questions directly.

Perhaps she can but doesn't want, or has already joined the forum but asked me, just by the way. I don't know, it doesn't matter. It was me who was asked for help, and I cannot see anything strange about that. Then, I asked you because I use commas just intiutively, I don't know any rules.
