Hi,
Dear members, please let me know which conditionals fits into the following sentences.

1) I am telling a story, which happend in the past, to one of my friend.
At that time, if Xyz had not told his father, he "would be/would have been" in jail.(Assume that Xyz is dead now because I donot want to connect the situation with the present.

2) I am getting an award for doing something good and asked to give a speech right after recieving it.

I would like to thank Xyz, because without him this(getting award) would not "have been/be" possible.

Thanks.

You try first, and then someone will comment on whether or not you are correct.

I think the answer for "1" is would be.Because I am talking about that particular time. And for "2" I should use would have been.

You have #2 right - "Without ... would not have been possible".

Thanks for the reply. I was going through conditions which clarified my doubts. What i have understood is "If I use had then would have will be used".Now my question is, For the same example(#1), Can I say that "If cyz didnot tell his father, he would be in jail?

Thanks for the reply. I was going through conditionals, which clarified my doubts. What I have understood is "If I use 'had' then 'would have' will be used". Now my question is, for the same example (#1), can I say [STRIKE]that[/STRIKE] "If cyz [STRIKE]didnot[/STRIKE] did not tell his father, he would be in jail"?

If XXX had not told his father, he would be in jail now.
If XXX had not told his father, he would have been in jail by now.
If XXX had not told his father, he would have been in jail last year.

Please see my amendments to your post in red. When you said "which clarified my doubts", did you mean "which helped me to understand what the things are which are causing me doubt" or "which helped me to understand the things which I had previously doubted"?
Remember to put a space after a full stop and before an opening bracket, and that we don't use a capital letter after a comma unless the word is a proper noun.

'If it wasn't for him, this would not have been possible.'
'If it wasn't for him, I would not get this award now.'
'If XXX did not told his father, he would be in jail next week.' (Assuming he will stand trial in a few days.)
Are they correct?
