[Vocabulary] Depth of Characters

"I like the actor because of his great acting skills and his depth of characters over the course of his career."

Does the phrase "depth of characters" make sense in the above sentence?

That doesn't work for me. I would say:
"I like that actor because of his great acting skills and the depth of the characters he has played over the course of his career."
