This is an entry from my diary. Please check it and correct any mistakes.

My father did a scary thing today. I saw him using a spoon to stir coffee, and then rinsed the spoon with dirty dish water, finally just put it back to the clean cutlery tray. I was really shocked. No wonder I often get stomachache. I usually cleaned the cutlery with tap water before I use them, but now I definitely wash them with detergent.

I wouldn't call what your father did "scary". I would say it is awful/distasteful/disgusting.
Did you try to reason out with him?

Yes, but he didn’t think that’s wrong.

Fair enough. He probably grew up during a time where hygiene was not important, and, as the saying goes, "old habits die hard".

... was not understood to be (or seen as) important. Hygiene has always been important. That's a matter of fact.
