Recently, I've read an article about cyber kidnaping which is about a boy who was tricked into isolating himself to a remote area. It reminds me that I've been receiving fraud calls in which scammers pretended to be my relatives by saying, "Hey, do you remember me? I'm your cousin!" When I asked what his name was. He said, "You didn't remember me? Your cousin!". As the online shopping has become popular, I've also received some fake audio recordings asking me to pay a large amount of money to redeem my package. I hope these people will be arrested as soon as possible.

Do I need to use the present tense for "pretended"?

Is "by" optional? Can I omit it? (by saying)

I was going to say those callers pretend to be related to you, but I read post #6, and I didn't do that.
