What's the difference between instant dinners and TV dinners?

I haven't heard "instant dinners." "TV dinner" is an older phrase, but still recognizable to me. Maybe not to the kids today.

I would tend to call them "frozen dinners." You pop them in the microwave for a few minutes, and you're good to go.

"Instant" tends to be used only for things like a quick soup that you "just add hot water" to. Or "instant rice" that is ready in 5 minutes instead of 20.

Could the "instant dinner" definition be extended to a meal where each guest has to do the cooking or assemble a meal with elements placed on the table, as with fondue?

I'm very curious about this.

That sounds like a lot of work! Instant involves very few steps.

Boil water.
Throw in rice.
Wait 5 mintues.

Open cup.
Pour in water.
Microwave for 3 minutes.
