“She purred down the line”


Does it mean that she expressed her feelings with pleasure (purred) and was thoroughly happy (down the line)?

I have struggled with finding a proper explanation for "down the line" that would make this sentence logical. The dictionaries in which I have looked it up translate it as "in the future" or " down the road". I only guess this is the right translation since it is a common knowledge how she (HM the Queen) felt about the outcome of the Scottish referendum, I am not 100% sure though, my translation is correct.

They held a private conversation indeed, but whether he showed up in person at Buckingham Palace, or talked over the phone I do not know.
