Dear teachers,
Would you be kind enough to tell me whether I am right with my interpretation of the expression in bold in the following sentences?
I was taking them to a very smart restaurant and expected o find Isabel arrayed for the occasion; with all the women dressed up to the nines. I was confident she would not wish to be outshone. (Maugham’s “The Razor’s Edge”, chapter IV)
dressed up to the nines = in one’s Sunday best; dolled-up; done up to kill; in full fig
dressed up as a sore finger
