I think the sentence is unlikely because there is no comma (or dash) between 'place' and 'next'.I said ' There is the place next to him' was a very unlikely sentence.
What you are saying it is ok to me and could you please tell me if that is indefinite noun phrase?The second is a very unlikely sentence. We don't normally need to point out a place if we already know that it is next to somebody.
