Engage or involve

The judge said that those prepared to .... in crime must be ready to suffer the consequences.

1. involve
2. engage
3. undertake
4. enlist

Would you please tell me why we can't use "involve" here?

Did you check the meaning of 'involve' in a dictionary before you posted this question?

I don't understand why you talk to your members in this way. It's a bit offensive. If you don't have time to answer such questions, you will be better off telling the truth. If I hadn't checked out the meaning of "involve", I wouldn't have asked from you.

People don't involve in crime. The may become involved in crime. Or involve themselves in crime. Or get involved with a crime.

But not "involve in crime."

The dictionary cited does state that it is often passive. I would say usually, if not always.
