Hi.

My friend sent me some photos of her home. Her home was flooded. She was a bit sad and I said "Everything will pass" to console her. I wonder if it's natural to mean "Every bad thing will finally pass and everything will be better".

"This too shall pass." it's a quote from the Bible.

I also thought it was from the Bible but Google says no. According to that "impeccable" source Wikipedia the phrase is found in both Jewish and Persian folklore and was also used in a speech by Abraham Lincoln.

Abraham Lincoln often quoted the Bible. And while it may appear in other places, I'm pretty sure it's in the Bible (despite what Wikipedia does or doesn't say).

Other old sayings:

- Count your blessings.
- Don't cry over spilled milk.
- Don't sweat the small stuff.
- Easy come, easy go.
- If you have your health, you have everything.
- It's always darkest before the dawn.
- Keep on the sunny side.
- Nothing lasts forever.
- Tomorrow is another day.

It is more commonly Every cloud has a silver lining in BrE.

I guess it's the same in AmE.

I chose my name Silver from this saying and Obama from Barack Obama.

There is a silver lining in every cloud.
The silver lining is not in the cloud. It's on the edge. [click]

This aphorism has always annoyed me. I'm looking at clouds without silver linings right now as they aren't in the right position relative to the sun.

I've always been confused about the meaning of the word "lining" there anyway. I never took it to be an outline around the edges of the cloud. I thought it referred to the inside of the cloud, like the lining of a jacket or a handbag. So I thought the point was that even though a cloud can look threatening and dark on the outside, if you opened it up it would be shining silver.

Right.

And don't get me started on 'Don't teach your grandmother to suck eggs'.
