[Grammar] excelling nature

Is the following sentence acceptable?

I was fascinated by its magnificent appearance, whose wonderful workmanship excelling nature.
 
No. "Excelling" is not the proper form. "Excels" works.
 
It's ungrammatical.

Change 'excelling' to 'excels' or 'excelled' and it would be better, though still odd.

What is 'it'?
