Is filling station also used in BrE or is it strictly petrol station?

It's a petrol station or a service station, not a filling station in Aus - and of course, never a gas station. I think that would apply also to Britain, but someone can verify it.

Thanks Raymott. So what do you do when you get to the petrol station? You

fuel up?
fill up?
tank up?
refuel?
get fuel/ petrol?

To my knowledge, filling station is the same as petrol station in the UK.

"Fill up" was the usual term used in the days when people could afford to do that. "Get petrol" is a neutral way of saying it.
