Say either "by police", "by police officers" or "by a police officer". It might be a good idea to say which airport or at least say "at an Iranian airport". Initially, I thought they had been interrogated at an airport abroad and then arrested and jailed when they returned to Iran.

A point of accuracy - Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe is/was not an Iranian student. She is a dual national (British and Iranian) who was, at the time of her detention, a project manager with the Thomas Reuters Foundation.

That's what I thought to begin with. Now I think it means that, when going back ("coming back" for the OP) to Iran to visit their family, they were interrogated at the airport in Iran and then jailed.

I don't think it makes any difference whether we use "coming back" or "returning". The problem is "while".
