Hello!

I just wrote the sentence I think we should put it off for the while in a letter and then I started wondering is that correct English at all? Should I say "for a while"? Do the two mean different things?

My native language has no definite and indefinite articles at all so they always confuse me :-?

The everyday expression is 'for a while' but I believe I've seen the used here for literary effect.
