1-For such an important event, the number of journalists present was pretty small.
2-For such an important event, a small number of journalists showed up.

I think both these sentences are correct, but do they mean exactly the same?

I think 1 means:
A-Considering that it was such an important event, the number of journalists present was pretty small.
(The "for" is the one we have in "He looks young for his age.")

I think 2 means:
B-A small number of journalists showed up for such an important event.
(The "for" is the one we have in "I came here for you.")

Would you say I am right?

Gratefully,
Navi.

You're right. The second just doesn't sound right especially when you put it as "A small number of journalists showed up for such an important event". "Such" needs something else in the sentence.

It was surprising that only a small number of journalists showed up for such an important event.
Surprisingly few journalists showed up given that this was such an important event.
