(1) I think that many books feel that "While preparing" = "While HE WAS preparing....."

(2) Thus, I think most people would classify that -ing word as a present participle.

(1) Perhaps we don't use the same books.

(2) My book tells me that the term "present participle" applies to both the present progressive (He is preparing) and the past progressive (He was preparing).

(3) All the persons who have answered this question agree that there is no so-called "gerund" in that sentence.
