I want to say two people get into an easy conversation. Can I use "fall into conversation"?

Is this okay?

Although they'd never met, John and Emily fell into an easy conversation in the drive to the ceremony.

Although they'd never met, John and Emily fell into an easy conversation in on/during the drive to the ceremony.

The use of "fell into easy conversation" (no article) is OK in your main sentence, in which it suggests that they didn't feel like the conversation was forced in any way. . I don't like the use "[an] easy conversation" as much in your opening sentence. We can "get into [a] conversation easily". To be honest, I'm struggling a bit to explain why the countable version sounds OK in one but not in the other.
