I read this sentence on Cambridge.org.

He hauled himself over the wall, grunting with the effort. (source: grunt)

What does "grunting with the effort" mean? Does it mean he was very tired?
 
Emitting the grunt helps with the physical task of pulling himself over the wall.
 
People often make sounds when exerting a great physical effort. Have you heard the grunting sounds made by tennis players when hitting a fast ball?
