head back out

Hi

The guy was on a farm and was walking around the nearby hill. He reached another gravel road that headed back out another way.

Does it mean it led back to the place from which he came from, but he had to take a bit different route? Or maybe it led to a main road, but he had to take a different route?
 
I take it to mean that the other gravel road led away from the farm by a different route, presumably back to the main road.

There's nothing to indicate whether he chose that route or returned the way he came.
