A man I know told me he would be learning English for three months. Tonight I met him in an English Club meeting. I asked him:

How are your English studies going?

Is the above italic sentence natural? How about the following italic sentence, is it natural too?

How is your English studies going?

Is studies singular or plural?

Is studies singular or plural?

It's plural. However, I think it's odd to ask "How are your English studies going?"

Is the common question "How is your English study going?"

They're both possible. I would use them in different situations. I would use "are/studies" if I was referring to the whole process (classes, homework, revision etc) and "is/study" if, for example, I walked in on someone while they were in the middle of studying English.

Only this one works for me: "How are your English studies going?"

The first - every time - for me, and I am relaxed about BrE singular/plural issues (I think).

I prefer and frequently use the singular for all cases (both situations outlined by emsr2d2 in post #4).
