How good is his English? What kind of accent does he have?

Thanks a lot.

His knowledge of English sounds about intermediate, though it's hard to tell when he is using so much mathematical jargon (most of which I didn't understand).

I would say I also couldn't understand about 50% of the rest of what he said either.

I can't tell where he's from by his name, but he has what I would call a fairly standard Far East accent (China, Japan, Vietnam, Thailand, Korea etc). It's difficult generally for people from that part of the world to pronounce English because the natural sounds of their languages are so completely different to those used in English. He has a fairly strong accent.

I feel a little sorry for the guy, actually! I don't think he's a natural public speaker but to be expected to give a presentation in any language other than your own is always very difficult!

I would say I also couldn't understand about 50% of the rest of what he said either. I agree. So when native speakers can't understand a lot of what he is saying, one has to honestly say that his pronunciation is quite poor.
And I agree with the rest of what emsr2d2 said.

Thank you. You said you couldn't understand about 50% of the rest of what he said, is this because what he said is technically difficult or what?

The guy is a Vietnamese who just won the Field award this year. I agree with you that he was not born to talk in public like a politician but it's sure that he was born to be a great mathematician.

I would rather be a great mathematician than any kind of politician! :-D

Anyway, what I meant was that I could not understand about 50% of what he said, excluding the technical content. I didn't understand most of the technical stuff simply because I am not a mathematician, but his introduction was not technical yet I only understood about half of it due to his pronunciation.

Thanks for your clarification, I think I understood what you meant from beginning but I have to ask to be completely sure.

I think a part from Vietnamese accent he also has a strong French accent, do you think so?

I have just watched the video, so I agree he has got a mixed accent -with a strong French one!

EDIT: Did he study in France?

Yes, I actually did think he seemed to have a hint of a French accent in there too!!

Hi, could you please translate this paragraph into English so I can understand it better? Thanks.

This is "International English" or "Scientific English". The more lectures from non-native speakers from different parts of the Globe you hear, the more you understand them. Specially if you stick to your main field of interest and be familiar with the technical jargon. I could understand more than 50 % of the English spoken in that sample (I am not a native speaker).
Of course the audience does have to make an additional effort, but it is more than worth it. In the beginning of the talk it is harder, but soon you get yourself more accustomed to it and it gets easier - that is the natural process of human communication.

I think maybe this kind of English is better understood by non-native speakers.

I agree with you, in particularly, the last sentence. Scientific research is the main part of my job so it helps a lot to understand him. If he hasn't got strong French accent I can understand the talk 100%.

He has been living in Princeton (New Jersey) for three years, so he could perfect his main demonstration, which is the other part of the lemma at University Chicago, where he is currently working. "It is really pity for France not to have kept him" regret J-P Bourguignon, who is the director of the IHES and wants to help him to build a Mathematic School in Vietnam.

Thanks philadelphia.

It's 1am here, the time I went to sleep ;-)
