How many socks are there?
nine socks.
I saw this question and its answer in a book.
the question is ok with me.But the answer isn't.
I think we should say nine pairs of socks.

Welcome to the forum.

Is there a picture of socks to go with the question?

If you say there are nine pairs of socks, there are 18 socks.

Sorry I couldn't add the image. But there is a question -How many socks?
the answer is nine socks. That is all.
is it ok to say ( nine socks)

If there are nine socks, then say "Nine socks."
If there are nine pairs of socks, then say "18 socks" or "nine pairs of socks."

Say whichever you mean. We can't know whether there are nine socks or nine pairs.

The above should have solved your problem. If not, count the number of single socks in the image and let us know. We'll then advise you further.

The dryer eats my socks. So I have trouble finding mates.

Didn't you know? There is a cosmic force that takes single socks and turns them into Tupperware lids.

Thank you all of you so much.I got it now.
I can say...There are nine socks which means there are four pairs and half.
And generally we can say..there are six socks .there are 4 shorts.
But can we say there are three shorts in the same way?

For some reason, shorts, pants, undershorts, underpants, trousers, and probably some other items of apparel worn on the lower half of the body are counted in pairs. So you have to write four pairs of shorts. The plural in pairs is optional; some people say four pair of shorts. When applied to these garments, the word pair doesn't mean two; it's just a counting marker.

Having nine socks does not necessarily mean you have four and a half pairs. You could have three pairs and three unmatched socks, for example.

Note that there is no space between the end of a word and a punctuation mark. A space is required after each punctuation mark. Every sentence has to start with a capital letter.

ali,

We recommend posting a question on one forum only initially. If you do not get a satisfactory answer from that forum and you feel that you have exhausted its possibilities, then of course trying a different forum might help. It is only courteous however, to tell the second forum that you have already asked the question on another forum and then give a precis of the answers you received there, along with an explanation of why you are now looking elsewhere.

Had I realised that ali was posting the question in other forums, I would not have wasted my time here,
thank you for your time, but you know up till now I hadn't got what I want.
If one is ill ,he might go to ten doctors not only two.

‘That is the wrong sock, it doesn't match the other one.’

I even found that one

If you have nine socks you have, possibly, four pairs and a single. That's as complicated as it gets. What could possibly be missing?

All those doctors would need to be well paid for their time; we give our time freely.

Maybe I am here ill,but in other places I am a doctor and give my time freely.

That matter is simply this way:
1- There are nine socks. choose [ right] or wrong] English
2- There are five shorts.choose [ right] or wrong ] English
